GET TO KNOW US WBCM CULTURE

We believe in working hard. We stand behind our work and we stand shoulder to shoulder with each other—in support of one another and of the community. If we have a little fun in the process, that’s just because we believe in playing hard, too.

Anytime you mix right-angle-loving engineers with creative architect types, throw in process-honoring administrative folks and a diverse management body, you’re bound to get a lively group. That’s who we are. Smart. Driven. Introverted. Extroverted. Fun. And, lively—yes, definitely lively.

Shawn
We’re fairly certain that most firms in our industry don’t have a mascot. If they do, they’re probably not hiding him in their architectural renderings. At WBCM, Shawn has become a part of our team. Who’s Shawn? Shawn is a sheep. Not a real one, mind you. He’s a cute, wooly, little graphic image with a kind face. Sometime in 2002, one of our graphics people played a joke on an employee in our Highway Engineering department. See, the highway guy had his office space decorated with sheep—a humorous, yet unexplained, thing. The Graphic Illustrator created a cartoon-like image of a sheep and hid it in a rendering that our Highway group presented to the State Highway Administration. No one noticed it, but once the word got out, our employees and clients alike began to play the “where’s Shawn” game when they received renderings from our firm. Today, Shawn still makes an appearance in some—but not all—renderings and has become a WBCM superstar. Small foam sheep (think stress-ball size and material), branded with our logo, have infiltrated the office. Since then, our employees have taken these mini Shawns to a Virginia Tech graduation, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, fishing in Maine and Canada, to Hawaii with one of our principals and to beaches throughout Mexico, Tahiti and Florida. Where will Shawn show up next? You’ll just have to keep an eye out for him!

Balls of Fun
Whether it’s a softball, a basketball or a golf ball, we’re committed to having balls of fun. There’s just nothing like an afternoon on the links with coworkers, colleagues and clients. We host spring and fall golf outings to keep our tee shots sharp and our putting accurate. With bats and hoops, from spring to fall, we also get a little recreational exercise through pick-up basketball games and a friendly softball league.

Coming Home, Having Fun
Started in 2006, as a way to have fun together and to catch up with former employees, our homecoming weekend is now an annual WBCM event. Held in the fall, our homecoming activities start with a potluck luncheon, progress to a happy hour and pool tournament at the Rec Room in Towson the next day and conclude with our regular fall golf outing on day three. This homecoming celebration also kicks off our United Way campaign.

Reaching Out
The partnership between WBCM and the United Way of Central Maryland began in 2000. Employees participate each year in an annual 10-day workplace giving campaign to support the organization. To date, WBCM has raised over $85,000 to support the United Way of Central Maryland’s efforts to improve our communities and the lives of our neighbors. In addition, WBCM employees are major contributors to the annual Baltimore City Police Athletic League (PAL) event, hosted by the Baltimore Ravens and the Society for Marketing Professionals, Chesapeake Chapter. This December event delivers monetary donations, school supplies, winter accessories and toys—along with a little holiday cheer—to children, ages 6-14 years old, who are involved with the PAL community youth centers.
