Oracle Database Administrator (#08B-08-004)

WBCM seeks a database administrator with a BS/BA or Masters in, Computer Science, Geographical Information Systems or related field.  Candidate must have at minimum of 5 years experience in managing multiple Oracle databases in a dynamic environment.  Candidate must be able to perform critical Data Base maintenance and tuning.  Maintain tables and indexes. Back up and restore data base.  Add tables, columns. Recommend best practice to development staff.  Review data base designs; create new designs working with Requirements and Developers.  Work on optimizing the existing data base.  Work with designers for data base tables interface functions, and support upgrades and patches to Oracle as needed.  Review recommended patches and upgrades for system impacts and make recommendations to management.  The candidate must be able to work with minimal direction have excellent work habits and be flexible with the working environments.  Experience in GIS and spatial database in particular ArcSDE is a plus.  Experience in Transportation field plus.  Position is for onsite work at one of our clients in downtown Baltimore.  Position reports to WBCM onsite project manager.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS/BA or Masters in Computer Science, Geographical Information Systems or related field. 

  • 5+ years of proven/verifiable experience as a Oracle Database Administrator in a dynamic environment.

  • Candidate must have and be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Reliability, strong work ethic, and ability to work in a team-oriented environment

  • Desire Oracle certification preferably Oracle 10g.

  • Manage multiple Oracle databases and servers in a Windows 2003 Server Environment.

  • Knowledge and experience with the latest Oracle patches.

  • Knowledge in creating stored procedures for data validation, applications data calls, and creating and loading data.

  • Experience with data conversion, migration.

Additional GIS qualifications a plus:

  • Software experience: ESRI Suite (ArcGIS, ArcSDE, ArcIMS), TOAD, Visio, ErWin

  • Experience in ArcSDE troubleshooting and monitoring using SDE command line interface .

  • Experience managing a versioned geodatabase, multi-user editing, including designing workflow and monitoring versioned performance .

  • Experience with loading Raster Imagery, Re-projection, Dynamic Segmentation.

  • Experience with database connectivity methods using DAQ, RDO, ADO, ODBC and DBLibrary.

  • Experience in PL/SQL, Java, ASP and HTML.

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Configure a backup job to run on a specified schedule.

  • Ensure servers are current with Operating System and Oracle patches and security updates.

  • Prepare and implement disaster recovery plans for various Oracle based software systems.  Create upgrade and migration schedules and plans in a way so as to minimize the impact on production and mission critical systems.

  • Implement and document database security procedures as defined by MDOT security standards.

  • Conduct Random health checks on the databases and prepare performance reports.

  • Assist with database issues/errors and assist users and programmers with SQL queries and tuning.

  • Conduct routine maintenance tasks on the database servers for proactive monitoring like deleting log files, dump files, error correcting.

  • Provide on-call support after hours and on weekends as required. 

  • Monitor database performance and make modifications and adjustments to database architecture, storage methods and management system software to fine tune the database for optimum response time.

  • Monitor capacity and allocate space according to overall needs of systems users, available data storage and database management system requirements.

  • Implement Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and monitor all database activity.

  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports of database management performance, activities and special projects.

  • Troubleshoot problems related to availability of data to system users, space, database software, data flow, and data storage or data access.

  • Manage, migrate and debug application software, as it applies to the Oracle.
