Duties:     

The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all-encompassing.  Each person is expected to help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule. 

 

General:

  • Ability to lead, motivate and train staff

Technical:

  • Responsible for the successful completion of projects on time and within budget, which meets the client's expectations
  • Have a thorough understanding and knowledge of client's design procedures, policies, specifications, etc., and ensure that they are translated to the contract documents, specifically project scheduling, information research, field investigations, site layout, grading, road design, utilities, geometry, stormwater management (SWM), erosion & sediment control (E&S), stream restoration, cost estimation, and construction specifications.
  • Attend meetings (when required) and coordinate design with project manager while maintaining good client relations.  Good client relations mean the difference between a successful project and an unsuccessful project and affects repeat business opportunities.
  • Training of staff including delegation of responsibility within the project. Monitor staff's work on a daily basis to insure progress and maintenance of acceptable design practices
  • Monitoring work of sub-consultants to insure completion of work on time and within budget, including technical review of their work.  Also, coordinate work between other disciplines within the firm that are working on the design assignment.
  • Prepare written documentation of all client communications (telephone, meetings, etc.) in a timely manner and send to client for confirmation.
  • Coordinate short and long term staff needs with the Chief Engineer at regular staff meetings.
  • Review plans, specifications and estimates at various milestones to insure completeness and accuracy of work.

Contractual:

  • Be knowledgeable of contract terms and conditions and scope of services for their assigned projects.
  • Identify work that is beyond the required scope of services and notify the Chief Engineer before expanding man-hours.
  • Monitor budgets to ensure that budget spent is appropriate for project progress.

Administrative:

  • Be knowledgeable of company policies, benefits, etc. and counsel/mentor employees as needed.
  • Maintain correspondence and design files for assigned projects.
  • Make recommendations for staff advancements.

Professional Development:

  • Maintain and improve technical expertise by reading journals, publications, etc. and attending seminars.
  • Become active in professional and/or technical organizations
  • Be aware of career development of staff by constantly teaching and training (i.e., mentoring).

Soft Skills:

  • Communicate schedule/deadline conflicts to supervisor
  • Cooperate with team members
  • Exhibit flexible disposition and cooperative, positive attitude, willing to work overtime and willing to go "above and beyond" if the need arises
  • Seeks out opportunities to gain knowledge (exhibits initiative) and accepts new responsibilities (is growing professionally).

Experience:         

5 years in Civil Engineering, Site Design; must be a US citizen and have an EIT.

 

Skills:

Knowledge of site engineering, utilities, hydrology/hydraulics, and familiarity with MD SWM requirements, including environmental site design.  Experience using TR-20, TR-55, MS Word, MS Excel, and AutoCad 2012 version, Civil 3D APlus, Microstation v8 or v8i GIS-ESRI version 10.

Education:        

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or AA wioth compensatory experience

 

Working Conditions:   

Sometimes outside regardless of weather, otherwise, indoor office environment; travel sometimes required.  Overtime sometimes necessary.  Minimal lifting 10-20 lbs.

 

Reports to:  Chief Engineer

 

Salary Range:  Commensurate with experience

                                                              

Salary Type:  Exempt/Salary II (1.0 Overtime)
