Duties:     

The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all-encompassing.  Each person is expected to help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule. 

 

Project Managers will direct a technical staff comprised of Engineers, Designers, and CADD Technicians. Projects will be assigned to Project Managers based upon size and complexity as well as the capabilities of the Design Group.  When assigned to a Project Manager, staff will report directly to that Project Manager. Project Managers are responsible for evaluating the capabilities and size of assigned staff for meeting project schedules and technical requirements. Shortfalls are to be brought to the attention of the Department Manager before critical problems develop. Ineffective or unqualified staff are to be identified and brought to the attention of the Department Manager.  Minor infractions of Company Policy (such as lateness, excessive phone use, inattentiveness, etc.) are to be handled by the Project Manager.

 

Project Managers are the Firm’s primary point of contract with Clients. At all times, Project Managers are expected to conduct business in a professional and dignified manner. Good Client relations are of the utmost importance in being successful in the professional services industry, and will result in smooth-running projects and repeat business.

 

Project Managers will have the ability to successfully manage the design, and construction related activities for small and large engineering assignments.  Project Managers shall have:

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and train staff.
  • Ability to plan and organize and effectively utilize people, resources, and materials.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to schedule multiple and complex operations in order to meet schedules.
  • Ability to delegate while maintaining control.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to anticipate conflicts/issues.
  • Ability to complete projects profitable while satisfying Clients expectations.

 

Administrative Duties:

  • Review and check time sheets.
  • Schedule vacations of design staff.
  • Monitor work habits (punctuality, use of phone, use of Internet, attentiveness to work, etc.).  Take corrective action as necessary.
  • Be knowledgeable of Company Policies, Benefits, etc. and counsel/mentor employees as needed.
  • Maintain correspondence and design files for assigned projects.
  • Anticipate needs for materials and supplies.
  • Make recommendations for staff advancements, including compensation.

 Contractual Duties:   

  • Assist with preparation of Technical and Price Proposals and negotiations as needed.
  • Be knowledgeable of Contract Terms and Conditions and Scope of Services for their assigned projects.
  • Identify work that is beyond the required Scope of Services and prepare Change Order Requests before expanding man-hours.
  • Monitor budgets to ensure that budget spent is appropriate for project progress.
  • Develop Progress Reports and review Invoices for completeness and accuracy.

Technical Duties:         

  • Responsible for the successful completion of projects on time and within budget, which meets the Client’s expectations.
  • Have a thorough understanding and knowledge of Client’s design procedures, polices, specifications, etc. and ensure that they are translated to the Contract Documents.
  • Attend meetings and coordinate design with Client’s Project Manager while maintaining good Client relations.  Good Client relations mean the difference between a successful project and an unsuccessful project and affects repeat business opportunities.
  • Responsible for preparing work plans, manpower requirements, and anticipating both manpower and technical project requirements.
  • Training of staff including delegation of responsibility while maintaining control of the project.  Monitor staff’s work on a daily basis to insure progress and maintenance of acceptable design practices.
  • Monitoring work of Sub-Consultants to insure completion of work on time and within budget, including technical review of their work.  Also, coordinates work between other disciplines within the firm that are working on the design assignment.
  • Prepare written documentation of all Client communications (telephone, meetings, etc.) in a timely manner and send to Client for confirmation.
  • Coordinate short and long term staff needs with other Project Managers at regular staff meetings.
  • Review Plans, Specifications, and Estimates at various milestones to insure completeness and accuracy of work.
  • Sign and Seal Contract Documents.

 Professional Development Duties:     

  • Maintain and improve technical expertise by reading journals, publications, etc. and attending seminars.
  • Become active in professional and/or technical organizations.
  • Be aware of career development of staff by constantly teaching and training (i.e. mentoring).

 Experience:                  

Water Resources Project Manager must be Registered Engineer with a minimum of five to ten years of experience in Hydrologic/Hydraulic Design and preparation of construction documents.

If not a Registered Engineer, an individual with a Masters Degree in Environmental Science or Biology may be considered.  This individual must demonstrate experience in natural resources, environmental permitting and planning.  This experience must have been provided for Public clients in Maryland must also demonstrate at least 5 years of Project Management experience.

 

Skills:        

Project Managers must be knowledgeable and proficient in all aspects environmental design and permitting, including knowledge of storm water management, erosion and sedimentation control, drainage design, natural resource investigations, environmental permitting and preparation of construction documents.  Project Managers report directly to the Department Manager and/or the Principal-in-Charge, as the case may be.

Education:                   

A minimum of a B.S. in Civil Engineering, a Masters Degree in Biology or Environmental Science, or equivalent.

 

Working Conditions:   

Mostly inside office environment, but sometimes requires field reviews or travel to attend meetings.  Lifting: 10-20 lbs. Occasional overtime required.

 

Reports to:                    Department Manager and/or the Principal-in-Charge

 

Salary Range:               Commensurate with experience
